GOODBYE VERN--A hearse carrying the remains of former Ohio House Speaker Vernal G. Riffe Jr. leaves the Statehouse grounds after laying in state at the capital, in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday, Aug. 4, 1997. Riffe, who was know as "Mr. Speaker," ruled the House for a record 20 years before retiring in 1995.


BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD--Ohio Gov. George Voinovich ponders a question during a news conference concering the failure of the Ohio House to pass his tax plan for school funding, at the Riffe Center, in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday, Aug. 4, 1997. The issue will not be on the Nov. primary ballot, and a special election will most likely be held in early 1998 in order to meet the State Supreme Court's March 24, 1998 deadline (DeRolph v. Ohio) to improve public schools in Ohio.
